House Rules

We don't want to force too many rules on you; after all, you are on holiday, but we would be grateful if you could follow the guidelines below. It helps us, speeds up the changeover, and avoids having to make deductions from your deposit to cover the cost of rectification.

1. Please do not sit on upholstered seats in wet swimming costumes, or if you have freshly applied sun creams.

2. Be careful of leaving food lying around, whether inside or out. Ants are a fact of life in warm climates, and will be very appreciative of a good meal. Being sociable, they will invite all their family and friends around to share the feast. Please, therefore, clear away after every meal, and do not leave discarded food outside. For the same reason, empty the waste bin/bags regularly.

After that, all we ask is that you are thoughtful occupants: turning off electricity and water (water is an expensive commodity); close shutters when out, and in hot weather; not being noisy late into the night, etc.

Pool Rules

All users and visitors must accept the Pool Rules. These are non-optional and are necessary first for safety reasons, but also because abuse can cost large sums of money.

From 2004, the French Government have introduced strict laws relating to swimming pools. Regrettably, this has been due to the large number of deaths from drowning, particularly of children. We have the choice of either secure child proof fencing, or an electronic alarm in the pool. Originally, we chose the latter, but experience proved it to be inappropriate for a rental property - the operating instructions were too complicated to learn within two minutes after a long journey. We have therefore now fitted a fence system, with child proof gates. Please use it correctly, and not prop the gate open - in French law, you are also responsible for protecting any child who may, in theory, wander in from the street. IF you are responsible for children, do not forget that your responsibilities continue despite the sun and the wine. In our first year of operation, without the fence, we became aware of two toddlers falling in the pool whilst parents were inside the house.

All swimming pools in France must have an approved security system.

Specific Pool Rules:

1. Children under 16 years old must be supervised, whether they can swim or not.
2. No items of glass, crockery or sharp objects are allowed around the pool whatsoever. This includes bottles, plates cups etc. Ample plastic or stainless steel items are available for use, including plastic insulated jugs (for cold drinks or wine) and cafetiere for coffee. Broken glass can cause severe injuries to bare feet, and can be an expensive disaster in a swimming pool. We define the pool area as that within the fence.
3. No sharp objects are to be taken into the pool. This may sound silly, but people do odd things on holiday.
4. No items are to be thrown into the pool that could damage the liner or the filter. Food and plants ruin the water quality, and heavy objects easily damage the liner.

The above have major implications on safety and costs. The following are not in the same league, but nevertheless are important:

a) The light in the filter unit is not a step. Please do not use it as such, or it may break off.
b) Do not operate the pool light for more than 2 hours at a time. (Yes, we find it difficult to understand, too.) Please, therefore, turn it off at the end of the evening. (The light control is situated in the twin bedroom, along with the pool controls.)
c) Do not change the filter pump timer settings without consulting with Rachel beforehand.

d) If the pool is covered, it is for the very good reason that it is unsafe to use. The water quality is being maintained by the winter chemicals. Being hardy is not sufficient protection - you will suffer mild burns and rashes, so please do not remove the cover yourself. Once the cover is off, it is off for the summer, and the water will have been corrected for acid/alkali balance for user comfort.

Any broken glass or other object requiring special measures to remove from or repair to the pool will result in the occupant being charged the full cost of the work necessary to rectify the situation. Liner repair, and drainage/re-filling the pool will involve substantial costs, including possible compensation to other guests. The water to fill the pool alone costs approximately £250.

If you accept and keep to these rules, you will still have a great holiday, but will not run the risk of accident or substantial costs.
